Cindy Eyler
Wonder is a veteran, 10 years old as of May 2010. He's a black Lab mix Cindy found when he was 5-6 weeks old. He'd been sold out of the back of a car in Baltimore the night before to a teenager for $20. By the following afternoon, with no food in the interim, he'd lost the use of his rear legs. He could still drag himself to greet her, though, and a little food had those legs working just fine by the time he got to the vet's office.
His first Dock Dogs event was Delmarva's Autumn Splash in November 2007. He very reluctantly jumped/hopped in one time (4' 6") and promptly decided that it was no fun going into that very cold water. But the following spring, at Puppypalooza, he earned his Regional Junior title. [He also earned his reputation as the slowest dog to exit the water.] That August he earned his National Junior title.
We only go to pond/lake events now, because Wonder often refuses to jump into a pool. He has a dicey hip, and I think it has sometimes hurt him to come back down those slippery steps. Good thing we're members of CDD, guaranteeing at least two pond events a year. And we loves jumping at Codorus and Dover.
Wonder holds championship titles in APDT Rally Obedience -- ARCHX, RL2X(AOE), RL1X -- and it shows in his rock-solid sit/stay on the dock. He is still actively competing in RallyO, working toward the two highest-level championship titles available. He has been a Pets on Wheels volunteer at a Baltimore nursing home and will be again when he's not quite so busy.
His canine housemates are Jujube (Pit Bull) and CieCie (Dogue de Bordeaux-Pit Bull mix). Alas, the very athletic Jujube swims but won't jump, and CieCie won't swim at all.
